Purity
in Dress
“And they were
both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed”
(Gen. 2:25). Such was the state of
innocence enjoyed by the first human pair prior
to the entrance and defilement of sin. However,
with sin came shame and thus, “they sewed fig
leaves together and made themselves aprons.”
(Gen. 3:7)
It is
significant that having sinned, man’s very first
realization was in connection with his physical
nakedness, followed by a sense of shame and an
attempt to clothe himself. Man today has
completely reversed the process. He appears in
public in various stages of undress, denying
that such is sin, and thus, feeling no shame for
his conduct.
“Were they ashamed
when they had committed abomination? Nay, they
were not at all ashamed, neither could they
blush”
(Jer. 8:12).
The art of blushing had disappeared from
Israel. Some in spiritual Israel have replaced
the “blushing cheek” with the “sunburned thigh.”
God’s
attitude with regard to dress can be clearly
discerned in his response to Adam and Eve’s
attempt to remedy their physical state. “Unto
Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make
coats of skins and clothed them” (Gen
3:21). Their temporary clothing of fig
leaves would be comparable to a modern day
bathing suit. However, such was not sufficient,
therefore, God provided them with more permanent
and modest apparel.
It is
significant that God clothed both Adam and Eve.
Double standards often exist between man and
woman, but they have been erected by man, not
God. God’s standard for purity and holiness is
the same for both sexes.
It is
worthy of note that God addresses this matter of
modest apparel at the very beginning of human
history. Thus, the “how” of dress is not an
optional matter, an expression of divine
indifference. Purity in dress is imperative,
for “without holiness, no man shall see the
Lord” (Heb. 12:14).
